So it’s been a few months since my first post marking, the beginning of my plans to sell my worldly possessions and venture out into the world (outside of the U.S.). As you might imagine, things have been a bit hectic in around here, and I feel as though time has simply slipped past me. At this point I have managed to sell off most of my stuff (see also large furniture, household goods, and everything save the bare essentials and items I plan to pack into my car and take with me upon return from my adventures), but am still holding out for the last possible moment to sell my bed (the most amazing bed ever!). Beyond that I still need to find a good home for Roxy (please contact me if you know of anyone who might be interested), and offload a few more odds and ends.
As for the trip, plans have changed a bit, and now include a one week stop-over in the Cook Islands, as well as a month in Europe. Both of these stop sort of came together by happen-stance, but I am really glad that they did. A few weeks back, still struggling with the decisions of whether or not to visit Fiji, and hoping to find some fellow-travelers who might like to join me for certain legs of my journey, I put a post up on Facebook outlining my plan, and asking if anyone might be on the road around the same time and would like to meet up. Almost immediately, I received an email from Christine, a friend of a friend who I had met last year at her holiday part in LA. As it turned out, Christine was planning a trip to the Cook Islands to photograph a wedding. She planned to leave May 8th, spend a week in Roratonga, then travel to Auckland, to spend a few more days exploring New Zealand. This could not have been more perfect! I too had planned to leave early to mid May (though admittedly, I had been procrastinating about finalizing my departure date), and wanted to spend a week someplace tropical decompressing from life before I began my adventure in New Zealand. After checking out a few photos of Roratonga, and an EXTREMELY kind offer from Christine to let me crash in her hotel room, I managed to find a ticket on the same flight as her, and 60,000 credit card miles later, my trip had an official beginning!
As things stand currently I will be leaving San Diego May 8th, flying to LAX to meetup with Christine, then heading on to Roratonga for a week of relaxation before heading on to Auckland on the 15th. I have to admit, I’m a bit anxious/nervous/excited, and at the same time sad to leave all my friends (and my life in general) behind as I venture out to see the world. The sadness is multiplied by the fact that, in true representation of my luck, I met an amazing woman a little over a month ago. To say that I have grown a bit fond of her doesn’t really do justice to my true emotions. It’s kind of scary to know someone for such a short period of time, yet feel such an intense connection to them. And yes, I’ve heard the statement “if it’s meant to be, it will be,” about a 100 times from 100 different people, but that doesn’t make the situation suck any less! But what can you do. I need to take this trip, scratch the itch, explore, see the world, find myself or at least find out more about the person I already know I am. I guess there’s not much you can do except take the leap, and hope for the best. I have a funny feeling this isn’t going to be the end of our story, but rather an interesting beginning to a much longer tale.
There’s so many more things I feel like I need to share, but for now, just stay tuned, this party is only getting started…
